is currently seeking a passionate New Plants Assistant Manager, plant-savvy horticulture professional to assist in maintaining new plants and the systems for future introduction.
This role will also develop plants to their fullest growth for optimum cuttings and utilize space to control costs, demonstrate the ability to optimize the evaluation, growth of plants and speed to introduction to fully leverage capabilities and grow our market leading position within the global marketplace.

Responsibilities:
Growing Maintain small lots of new plants for evaluation purposes.
Manage seven acres of containerized production Determine proper pot size, environment, and growing conditions.
Responsible for watering needs of plants.
Identify pests & diseases and learn different techniques to control them.
Manage 30 acres of field production Maintain the F2 stock field in all areas of:
nutrition, pruning, and watering Utilize proper labeling and maintain inventory Organize seedling plants and germplasm plants for optimal long range space planning Manage spring and fall field plantings Name and propagate all new selected varieties from F2 Propagate new plant varieties for possible introduction per protocol.
Determine proper:
size of liner, timing of cuttings, rooting hormone and rooting environment of cuttings Shift liners to containers to maximize grow time and future cutting wood Achieve desired production plan numbers Record rooting rates Experiment with new propagation techniques and timings Maintain/grow the cutting wood for optimum cutting production and future introductions.
Grow adequate stock to achieve desired introduction production plan Take initiative to move new product through process to maximize introduction year Plan / schedule / evaluate / follow-up work progress and prioritize work activities.
Maintain daily record keeping activities in order to monitor work crew efficiency and workflow.
Maintain detail inventory counts of all on hand material Maintain and repair equipment and facilities used in new plant production.
Work with the Stock Manager and General Manager to coordinate activity needs requiring a larger workforce.
Work with Breeding Assistant Manager to facilitate needed breeding stock plant propagation Evaluation Work with President, New Product Development Manager, General Manager, Plant Breeder, Stock and R&D Manager, and Finished Grower Support Manager on evaluation of all genetics Introduction decisions Prioritization of genetics Planning Documents all aspects of evaluation Flower color Flower size Habit Growth Other characteristics Develop standard protocol in-house form to document evaluation, including images Evaluate containerized trial Evaluate garden trials Evaluate propagation trials and work with propagation manager on introduction Receive plants from worldwide breeder network Tag new varieties from seedling production and get into growing/evaluation systems Source industry standard genetics for comparison Source all competing brand genetics for comparison Trial different finished growing protocols (PGR, flower color, lights, forcing, etc.
) Develop growing procedures and propagation techniques Marketing Provide plant material of all proprietary varieties for various events Gold Key Meeting Leaderboard Meeting Tours Summer and winter tradeshows Garden Center events Garden Writers Botanical Gardens Proven Winners events Staff Development Determine long term personnel needs for growing department Full time staff Crew leaders Part Time hourly staff Provide on-going training to departmental employees - efficient work procedures, safety policies and procedures, etc.
Participate on safety committee Assess the performance of departmental employees - provide regular feedback on daily activities; administer disciplinary action, as needed Responsible for written documentation of all related policies and procedures.
Work with all departments to accomplish common tasks; team player.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
2 or 4 years Horticulture or related degree and 3-5 years of growing / propagation responsibilities including some supervision or equivalent work experience in a supervising position involving the growing / propagation of plants.
Must be able to assist crews in their daily work assignments, as needed.
Computer skills are required for stock related tasks in SBI nursery database as well as proficiency in Excel and Word.
Bilingual English-Spanish skills are highly desirable.
Must possess the ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move 20 pounds.
Performance Requirements:
Must maintain a level of performance equivalent to company standards, that being a Meets Expectations in all areas of your performance evaluations (including but not limited to, Self and Management reviews).
